Cameroon Soccer Legend Emmanuel Kundé Dies at 68

Emmanuel Kundé, a key figure in Cameroon's historic 1990 World Cup quarterfinal run, has passed away at 68, the country's soccer federation confirmed. Kundé, a solid defender, scored a penalty against England in that quarterfinal before Cameroon lost in extra time. He also played in the 1982 World Cup, marking Cameroon’s debut. Federation president Samuel Eto’o praised Kundé as a "defensive wall" and “control tower” on the field. Kundé won two Africa Cup of Nations titles, in 1984 and 1988, and earned over 100 caps for the national team. He died of cardiac arrest at home. Kundé also played for Reims and Laval in France but was most closely associated with Canon de Yaoundé. He is remembered as an intelligent, dignified player with a “magic foot,” according to former teammate Emmanuel Maboang Kessack.

Riveiro, who joined Orlando Pirates nearly three years ago, guided the team to second place in the 2023 South African Premiership and was a runner-up in the 2025 Nedbank Cup. His contract, which was set to end in June 2025, was released early at his request. "I sincerely appreciate Orlando Pirates for allowing me to leave before my contract ended," Riveiro said. The Spaniard is expected to be on the bench for the team’s game against Lamontville Golden Arrows on Tuesday. Akani Simbine secured his third 100m DiamonFootballd League victory of 2025 in Rabat on Sunday May 25, 2025, clocking 9.95 seconds to maintain his strong season form. The South African sprinter surged past early leader Ferdinand Omanyala and finished well ahead of the competition. Omanyala, the Kenyan record holder, took second in 10.05, while American Fred Kerley claimed third in 10.07. Despite a slow start, Simbine found his rhythm in the middle of the race, pulling away to win just outside his season’s best of 9.90. African Football Legends Illuminate Mogadishu in Historic Peace Match

Mogadishu Stadium buzzed with excitement as thousands of fans gathered for a historic exhibition football match, marking Somalia's major step toward rejoining the global football community. The event, part of a FIFA-backed “peace tour,” featured a star-studded African Legends team, including football icons Samuel Eto’o, Emmanuel Adebayor, and Jay-Jay Okocha. They faced off against Somali Legends in a thrilling 8-4 victory for the visitors. Attended by Somali Prime Minister Hamza Barre and officials from the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA), the match was hailed as a milestone for Somali sports after decades of conflict. Somalia’s national team has been forced to play abroad due to security concerns since the 1990s, with Mogadishu Stadium being renovated in 2020 after years of unrest. “This match shows the world that Mogadishu is safe and ready to host international football,” said Somali Security Minister Mohamed Ali Haga. Organizers hope the event will lead to Somalia hosting official matches again, as the nation seeks to rebuild its image and reclaim its place in global football. The electrifying atmosphere underscored Somalia’s ambition to move beyond its troubled past and onto the world stage.

SA Juniors Shine in African Golf Challenge

Twenty-five of South Africa’s top junior golfers showcased their talent in two major African events this April, underlining the country’s strength in junior golf. Two national teams defended South Africa’s dominance at the 2025 All Africa Junior Team Championship in Tunisia from 24–27 April, while 16 players competed in the Zimbabwe Junior Open in Harare. The boys’ team—Dewan de Bruin, Roelof Craig, Johndre Ludick, and newcomer Marno Lange—aimed to extend their unbeaten run of 17 titles, taking on teams from 13 African countries. The girls’ team, also undefeated since the event's inception in 2017, featured Kesha Louw, Lisa Coetzer, and debutant Casey Twidale, who competed against seven other nations. Historic Wins for Coetzer and Huxham at 2025 Nomads SA Girls Rose Bowl

Lisa Coetzer etched her name into the history books by becoming the first back-to-back winner in the Championship Division of the Nomads SA Girls Rose Bowl Championship, while Gemma Huxham secured a breakthrough national victory in the Silver Division at Durbanville Golf Club. Coetzer carded rounds of 73, 72, and a final-day 75 to seal a two-stroke victory, holding off a strong field that included 36-hole leader Gia Raad, who shot a tournament-best 69 in round two. Coetzer’s final round, highlighted by birdies on the 2nd and 15th, proved decisive despite late bogeys. “I decided to focus purely on my game. I had a rocky start, but stuck to my process,” said the 14-year-old. Her composed par on the 18th sealed her title defense, making her the only player to win the event in consecutive years since its 2007 inception. In the Silver Division, 12-year-old Huxham led from the opening round, with scores of 84, 83, and 84 to win by two shots over Chloe Utterson. “I just wanted to have fun,” said a thrilled Huxham, who claimed her first national title and second GolfRSA tournament win. Both champions showcased composure and talent, marking a memorable edition of the prestigious junior event.

Dylan Naidoo Makes History with Play-Off Victory at Investec SA Open

Dylan Naidoo etched his name into South African sporting history with a dramatic play-off win at the Investec SA Open Championship, becoming the first South African of colour to claim the prestigious title — and his first European Tour victory. Despite a weather-shortened 54-hole event at Durban Country Club, the 26-year-old Johannesburg native held his nerve to triumph, fittingly at the same venue where Sewsunker “Papwa” Sewgolum made history in 1963. Sewgolum, who won the Natal Open during apartheid, was infamously denied access to the clubhouse and received his trophy in the rain. “For what this means in terms of Papwa Sewgolum and him having won here, it’s incredible. I feel like he was with me today,” said an emotional Naidoo. Adding to the day’s emotion, Naidoo’s father made a last-minute return from the airport to witness his son seal victory. “Me and my dad have been through it all. I’m on the DP World Tour, I’m going to play in The Open. It’s a dream,” Naidoo said. The moment marked a powerful tribute to the past — and a bold step into the future for South African golf.
